About the lesson
I believe that the art of practicing is both the most important and the most universally applicable part of music. Good practicing teaches you how to find and analyze problems, how to break them down to find solutions, and how to fit your short term work into a larger vision. Because music is an art and not a science, it also teaches you how to go beyond all of that and find enjoyment and meaning in what you create. The vast majority of any musician’s time is spent alone with their instrument, and I believe a teacher’s primary job is not to guide the student during the lesson, but to show them how to find their own path forward outside of the lesson.

About John
I'm a professional cellist currently teaching and performing in the Houston area. I believe that musicianship and teaching are best with a generalist approach focused on conceptual understanding, rather than with a hyper-specialized approach focused on small detail, which is part of why I have both Master’s Degree in Cello Performance from Rice University, and Bachelor’s Degrees in Cello Performance and Computer Science from Bard College.
I've performed in venues across the United States and Europe as both a soloist and chamber musician, and has been a fellowship recipient at many renowned music festivals. Some of my recent concert highlights include a performance of the Brahms Clarinet Quintet with David Shifrin, a recital in Peter Serkin’s Haydn Project series playing with Peter Serkin and Todd Philips, and a solo performance of the Walton Cello Concerto with Leon Botstein and The Orchestra Now. As a teacher, I have years of teaching experience with students of all levels in my private studio and through Rice University's preparatory division.

John is a fantastic cellist, has an excellent eye for analyzing and solving problems, can explain confusing and tricky concepts very clearly, and is exceptionally patient and kind. His extensive background of cello experience (in both performance and teaching) make him a great fit for any student!
Besides being both a talented musician and cellist, John is an excellent teacher. His deep knowledge of music, combined with his patient and approachable nature, make learning with John easy! Dedicated and reliable, John will meet a student wherever they're at musically, and work hard to help them accomplish their goals. Choosing John is a decision you can feel good about, and your music will thank you too.
I have collaborated with John as a chamber musician within the past several years, so I can attest to his open-mindedness, kindness, dedication, and personal discipline. I am confident that these values also deeply inform his pedagogy. Any student will benefit greatly from his ideals, in addition to his remarkable qualifications as a talented, rigorously educated cellist.
