Reading Tutor: Over 20 years as a Job Developer and Job Readiness Class Instructor. Last 6 years as a Substitute Teacher for grades K - 8. Individual Reading teacher for students as needed.

About the lesson

My teaching approach to Reading is first to explain to the students how important it is to know how to READ. My main quote is "If you do not know how to read this world will EAT YOU UP." You won't even be able to take care of yourself when you become grown if you do not know how to read. Then depending on what grade the student is in, I would then chose a book that is a grade lower and have that student read to me. If I see that the student has trouble, then I will go down another grade, I most likely start from there. The words that the student do not know I will underline. After reading about 2 to 4 pages, I will then write those words on a sheet of paper (usually around 5 to 7 words) I will leave ample space in between each word so that the student can copy each word 7 times. I would instruct the student that as they copy each word to look at the word and say it aloud. I would have the student to take those words home and study them by copying and pronouncing each word. In our next session, we will go over each word and read the pages again. Usually if the student has studied the words, improvement is shown. We repeat this process at each session and I must say that the students actually improve their reading by a high percentage within time. And that makes me feel very proud.
