Super Prof
John is one of our best tutors Piano. They have a high-quality profile, verified qualifications, a quick response time, and great reviews from students!
About the lesson
I teach online via Zoom, using the Synthesia app which allows you to see the exact keys I'm playing on my keyboard.
My teaching method is to focus on whatever type of music the student loves most, and to build from there. I believe that many people give up their dream of playing an instrument simply because they aren't inspired enough, so my goal is to instil a love for music, whatever that means personally for each individual student.
Everyone learns differently and has their own pace and rhythm. I have some students who like to have a regular weekly or biweekly lesson, and others who just get in touch once in a while when they have digested the previous lesson and feel ready to build on it. Whatever the case, I am very flexible and we can figure out what works best for you.
PLEASE NOTE: I am not currently available for in-person lessons.

About John
Originally honing my skills on the British jazz scene and holding residencies in restaurants and bars around the country, I then went on to tour the world for five years playing on cruise ships, hotels and festivals. I returned to London in 2019 in order to complete my master's in jazz piano at the Guildhall School of Music, and during this time performed regularly at Ronnie Scotts, The Vortex and many other venues across the UK. I currently split my time between London and South America, as I am focused on Salsa and Cuban music, while also working with British pop producers.
I have also worked extensively in musical theatre, most recently as musical director for 'Jersey Boys', and on the first US national tour of 'Summer: the Donna Summer Musical'. The video shown below is from my stint playing and directing 'After Midnight', a show set to the music of the Duke Ellington Big Band.

Perfect! My piano experience with John has been nothing short of wonderful. He listened to my goals and delivered a curriculum that completely meets my needs. He brings so much enthusiasm and instruction to each lesson, I have learned so much with John and really enjoy the time. I highly recommend him for anyone at any skill level desiring to learn.
Perfect! John is probably one of the best teachers around here! He is methodical and his explanations are super clear. I really feel that I'm improving after each lesson and I'm always waiting to do the next class. He also sends me a lot of albums and songs about things we've been talking during our lessons and that makes a nice connection between what I'm study at the moment and how musicians apply them into their songs. If you want to learn jazz piano, John is the teacher you need!
Perfect! I have had seen many different teachers over the years and I’m so glad to have finally found John. I was overwhelmed by jazz piano for a long time but the way he explained it was exactly what I needed, and it’s finally making sense!! It’s so important to keep trying different teachers until you find the one you connect with.

Super flexible and passionate teacher. I really enjoy my lessons with John because whatever we're learning, he shows a true love for the music. You can tell that he is always excited to talk about it and share his knowledge, but also learn from the student as well. Teaching is an art and John clearly has it down.
Fantastic teacher. Patient, clear and a genuinely nice guy. I'm a big hip-hop fan and we have spent the past few months playing through different beats and analysing them. It continues to blow my mind the way so many different songs follow the exact same fundamental rules.
I have been taking online lessons with John for over a year now. I was hesitant at first because I didn't know how effective online lessons would be, but it works really well to be able to see his piano keys light up on the screen. He always has interesting resources to reference whatever we're working on, and shares his screen to guide me through the music. He also sometimes notates music himself during the lesson with Sibelius. I actually now prefer it to in-person lessons because I can record the lesson to refer to later as opposed to having to worry about taking everything down in the moment. He also sends me WhatsApp tutorial videos if I need a summary of what we learned, which is super useful because I can watch his hands from above and copy them. What a time we live in!
John helped me revive my passion for blues when I hadn't played in almost 20 years! Highly recommended.
