About the lesson
To develop each students critical thinking ability by individualizing and personalizing their learning experience. Introducing an active learning environment is key in education today. By active environment I mean an interactive learningenvironment (within or outside of the classroom) where students contribute to the learning process. I strive to build a students ability to think about a question I have asked or that they have asked and attempt to generate an answer to that question. From experience, as this is how I currently run my classroom, I have noticed that students know more than they give themselves credit for.
Critically thinking about topics discussed helps in stimulating their minds and also facilitated acquisition of life long learning skills. It also makes the class a fun place to be. I have learnt a lot from my experience as a student. I know what not to do. It would be a huge mistake to make a classroom session a monologue or one way road. Getting your students comfortable enough to contribute to the learning process especially when questions are asked goes a long way. For me as the instructor, it lets me know that my students are paying attention, based on their response it also shows their level of understanding of the topic at hand, and overall it really just encourages me to give more. This is also beneficial for the students. How? Participation in a classroom builds their level of confidence, an envrionemnt where a student feels comfortable to participate brings about trust between an instructor and a student, and increase in the students interest or passion for that course. The fact that an instructor is willing to hear their views or opinions makes them feel valued, and this encourages more participation as well as a students ability to challenge themselves even beyond the classroom setting, fostering them in developing their minds and abilities and being the best of themselves.
Every student undergoes learning experiences differently, even if they are in the same institution, program and taking the same classes. When students reach out to me for help, I make sure I understand each individual students needs. A key problem I have noticed is students inability to study and understand their course work. Many of them seem to already have established individual ways of studying which according to them still seems to be ineffective . When I mentor such students, in most cases I do not change their method of studying (especially if it is a technique that I’m sure works) I only build on it, I help them in solidifying the foundation of the specific course by tutoring them, improving their studying techniques and setting up a proper study time table. I believe that every instructors teaching method and or technique should be totally student oriented. We live in a world that is fast paced, and there is a constant daily advancement in technology. A high number of students in this generation are tech savvy.
Another established philosophy of mine is to introduce the use of current technological teaching techniques inaddition to the traditional teaching methods in impacting knowledge as needed. A lot of studentsare visual learners. The use of pictures, videos, animations, virtual activities related to the course proves to be more effective. I have observed that in my use of these teaching techniques, a lot of students are much more involved and their retention capacity and understanding of the course content is life long. Using what they like (technology) in educating them is definitely advantageous.
Another Philosophy which I incorporate and strongly believe in is that an established, and elaborate means of evaluation and assessment must be put in place. During my journey as astudent, and also in my time as an instructor, I have observed that many instructors administer tests and exams only because they are required to. And through out the semester, most of them test a students ability and progress only through multiple choice tests/exams. I realised early enough that a proper evaluation of a students progress would require more than that. I employ the use of multiple assessment to evaluate a student. Some of which include- asessing them based on Team/Individual projects relating to the course work, presentations that requires them to speak and lecture a class employing the use of charts amd other forms of multimedia, hands-on activities, written and oral summary activities, assignments, quizzes, tests and exams (that includes multiple choice, listings, defining, labelling and proper essay questions). I see this approach as not just a progress tracker for the students but for also me as the instructor, because at the end of the day, after passing through the learning process , and these different assessment methods are carried out and the students come out successful, it is highly rewarding. The success of my student is my success as well.
I am a highly student oriented instructor, and every move I make is soley for the benefit of mystudents. I take it as part of my responsibilities to help nurture that seed of greatness within them, causing it to bloom, helping them see the great potential they possess, because I believe that oncethey recognise their potential, these students would be unstoppable. The sky would only be their starting point.
