About the lesson
I balance teacher- and pupil-centered learning methods, which means being able to impart knowledge (of literature, reading and writing skills, and history) in a formal, logical manner while paying attention to the student responds, to be alert to what particularly interests them as a way to draw them into an awareness of the broader subject at hand, and find ways to make it meaningful to them personally. Knowledge retention does not last without personal investment or imaginative involvement.
Thus, my lessons always involve students exercising their imagination. In analyzing literature, they engage, for example, in counterfactuals (“What if” questions eliciting different ways to think about what choices an author might have made, which can give greater meaning and impact to how the story, poem, or essay under consideration is structured). This kind of exercise creates greater student involvement in the object of study. This is also true of learning history.
Further, learning to write well is a refining of the student’s decision-making process. Writing each draft of a paper, they need to reconsider what they have previously written about their chosen topic. Entertaining counterarguments is essential to developing a more robust thesis. This includes questioning initial certainties that change as the student deploys critical thinking as they develop as writers.
Over my teaching career, I’ve adapted and refined my own assessment rubrics for writing, from assessing a student’s sentence-by-sentence skill to their ability to write a coherent, well-argued essay. More regular assessments track progress in reading comprehension, which is, of course, the foundation to writing well.

I have known David for 2 years now. His background in ESL, writing and literature are nothing to sneeze at. He has taught over 10 years, written and edited numerous published sources and has a mastery of the English language. He is continuously engaged in learning and educating others. David has helped me become a better writer and I highly recommend him.
I have known David Bowen for over fifteen years, since we were classmates in college. We have been close friends and colleagues ever since, maintaining an ever-evolving conversation on topics ranging from English and German Romantic poetry to the theory and practice of translation, post-colonial theory, philosophy, and psychoanalysis. David is an excellent editor of academic English and has worked with me on several cutting-edge historical and cultural studies books. His knowledge not only of English and American, but also world literature, is broad, deep, and richly informed by historical and philosophical context. David is also uniquely knowledgeable about the history and theory of speculative and science fiction, one of his areas of specialization. Perhaps most importantly, he is an open-minded and open-hearted individual with a lifelong commitment to teaching and learning. He has the experience and judgment to meet any student just where they are at and help them improve their writing, reading comprehension, critical thinking, and scholarly writing skills. I could not recommend him more highly to any student with a genuine interest in learning. --John Koster, PhD.
