About the lesson
I started my career researching the evolution of corbiculate bees and their gut microbiota. While working as a summer intern at the City of Autin, I learned about water quality and the locally famous Eurycea salamanders (Eurycea spp). This internship was a pivotal moment in my career as it opened my eyes to the importance of protecting our environment and our natural resources. When I returned to El Paso, Texas in 2017, I started working as a lab manager and research coordinator, and then eventually as a grant writer with El Paso Water. Presently, I am a natural resources specialist at TCEQ, where I continue to learn more and more about ways to protect our water and the animals that depend on it.
As a teacher, I will try to dissect every concept we go over and give a thorough explanation that will help you learn material rather than memorize it. I like to approach learning from the micro level first and then gradually take it to the macro level. If we work together, we will explore a realm that encompasses Biology, Statistics, Ecology and other disciplines. I enjoy having an interdisciplinary approach to learning. I like relating concepts from physics to other disciplines like Biology, for example, the physics of DNA replication.
There is so much in life that challenges our "general" knowledge. What is a circle? What is a point? Can a shape that requires every point of its circumference to be equidistant even exist? The sun nor the pupil of your eye is perfect... Only when you dive into the micro-world can you find almost "perfect" symmetry, but even then, a circle is simply a concept (one of many) that helps us understand our natural world.

About Luis Alan
I have about 2 years of experience teaching Biology and Evolution to college students.
For a younger audience, I used to provide swimming lessons. (Perhaps a little off track from Biology, but jumping to a 10 feet pool for the first time was extremely scary and anxiety-inducing for many students). Learning any discipline can be overwhelming, but with support and a good foundation, jumping off the edge is not that scary after all!
