About the lesson
My teaching methods will vary depending on skill level. I believe it is essential to develop sufficient technique on any instrument as a foremost goal and so if you are new to the instrument we will start there. I have a broad understanding of world music/musical theory spanning many different genres (specializing in jazz). I approach each lesson with structure but I have lots of room for flexibility and I am open to help people learn whatever musical style that they are most passionate about. My lessons can be geared to players of all ages and skill levels. I have lots of experience teaching newer students because I have a strong method to develop technique that my teachers have passed onto me. I also love to work with intermediate and more advanced players diving into more complex subject matter and musical conceptions. Though I specialize in bass, I also offer beginner to intermediate acoustic guitar lessons and have lots of experience teaching children and adults the basics of guitar. I would love to hear from you and help you or your child develop this craft and discover love for this beautiful artform we call music. *Currently, I am studying at one of the world's leading music conservatories at New York University in Manhattan, New York while working as an adjunct faculty member, so I will be teaching remotely via zoom. Take advantage of my fair lesson fee now before I get hired by a university to teach music professionally and my rates go up.

About Marshal
I have taught music classes at McGill University and specialize in 1 on 1 music instruction. During the pandemic, I have shifted my classes to zoom lessons and have adapted to teach subject matter online in an efficient way. I have been teaching beginner to advanced players for the last 10 years because I really enjoy music pedagogy and the reward of seeing my students progress on their instrument. Aside from teaching, I am a professional jazz musician active in the music scene both as a sideman and as a leader. I have studied music my entire life and have completed an Undergrad Degree in Music Performance from Humber College and hold a Masters's Degree with honours in Music Performance from McGill University. My future goal is to teach Jazz at a post-secondary institution and be an active artist in the music scene. I have had my music played on numerous radio programs (including CBC) and featured in editorial Spotify playlists. Currently, I am doing my artist diploma at one of the world's leading music conservatories at New York University in Manhattan, New York under scholarship.

Perfect! Marshall explained things well. Was very patient and encouraging. I found my lesson very helpful and would recommend him to others.
Perfect! Marshal is very attentive to his students' goals and is really good at adapting is teaching to them. He's a skilled performer and a talented musician who has lot to share regarding both playing mechanics and how to develop musicianship. He has an extensive knowledge of repertoire and can help you pick pieces that will improve your technique while remaining fun to play. He’s also a great guy and super fun to work with.
Perfect! Marshal was excellent at explaining things and giving good, practical exercises for getting to know the fretboard better. His easygoing manner coupled with in-depth knowledge of the instrument made the lesson easy and fun.
Perfect! Marshal is super knowledgeable, patient, punctual, and great at what he does! I highly recommend him to anyone who wants to learn acoustic guitar :)
- Marshal's response : Giulia is a fast learner and a very smart student. She has made tremendous progress in a very small amount of time and can already accompany herself strongly.
Perfect! Marshall, has an excellent approach to teaching. He is serious and knowledgeable yet fun and easygoing. I recommend him with no hesitation.
- Marshal's response : Ghassan is an excellent student and I am certain that he will excel with his upright bass studies
Perfect! I'm lucky to have the opportunity to have Marshal as an electric bass teacher. He makes me very confident that I can achieve the kind of proficiency that I want with my instrument . He is very generous and open with sharing his knowledge and is easy to learn from.
- Marshal's response : Julien is a very adept electric bassist. He has strong technical rudiments and tenacity to learn new material. We are currently going over some musical theory to help strengthen his musical conception and apply it to the bass. I am very lucky to teach Julien he makes teaching easy.
Perfect! My son has been learning the bass guitar by ear for a couple years. Within a few lessons, Marshal was able to assess his skillset and start teaching him the theory behind reading and ultimately creating music. I can definitely see and hear my son's renewed confidence in his guitar skills.
Marshal is patient, punctual, easy to work with, and has great passion for music. I would highly recommend Marshal as a music tutor.- Marshal's response : Jordan already has the basics down. He is a very very quick learner and has strong ears and the ability to pick up new material easily. As with a lot of students that learn by ear, they need to develop strong theory skills as well. This is the next step for Jordan as we look to broaden his sense of music through and Guitar/Bass.

On top of being a great dude, Marshal is an outstanding bassist and educator, who displays a vast amout of knowledge across many different musical genres. Whether you are just starting out, looking to get deep into Scott Lafaro jazz solo (or anything in between), look no further, Marshal is your guy!
Marshal is a wonderfully talented young man. He is a master at what he does, and shares it well.
Having worked with Marshal for many years I can highly recommend him as a bassist, composer, and educator.
Marshal's knowledge, experience and deep commitment to the upright bass is what sets him apart as an educator.
I'm impressed by his releases in jazz / folk / country and other genres as well as his overall versatility as a player. Be sure to check out his book on Scott Lafaro style techniques!Marshal has truly opened the bass guitar for me! Whether we are working on songs, technique, song writing or music theory he notices what I am missing and has beastly recommendations that make a difference. Its also nice to have a teacher who can satisfy my interest in blues, folk and jazz! He's got a masters in jazz bass performance from Mcgill, so yeah he knows what he's doing! I would easily recommend Marshal to any intermediate player who wants the keys to unlocking their instrument.
Marshall is a passionate, knowledgable and fun music teacher. He's able to take some of the more boring subjects and explain them in a clear and entertaining way. Highly recommend!
He is truly a wonderful musician and teacher. He mastered very sophiscate harmony and theory. He is a multiple instrumentalist. He is soft spoken and patient teacher. He has an interesting way of looking at music and works hard for the students. I highly recomend him.
Marshall is an accomplished Musician with expertise in jazz, pop, country, and other contemporary styles. Marshall is an expert of technique on the upright bass. In all of my experiences playing with Marshall, his eminent musicianship has elevated the level of the ensemble. He's also a 'super chill dude' trust me.
I've had the pleasure of knowing Marshal for 6 years now. He is very kind, patient, has a great sense of humour, and explains concepts very well. Marshal would make an excellent teacher.
Marshall Herridge is an extremely talented and promising bass player who I’ve had the privilege to play with. He is an incredible human being: one who can make you laugh but is also serious, responsible and willing to teach the broad knowledge he capitalized during his career.
In one word: wow. Marshal is probably the best bass teacher I'vee ever had! He analyzed my shortcomings and gave me really good exercises to overcome them! Thanks again Marshal!
Marshal is always a joy and an inspiration to work with, no matter the genre style or skill level he’s always been able to breakdown concepts in a palatable way with practical examples along the way
He has a passion for helping people express themselves through their music and discover a life long love for musicianshipView more recommendations
