Who wrote the first work of poetry, and is it something that a collector can seek out in an antiquarian bookstore? The Epic of Gilgamesh often is cited as one of the earliest works of epic poetry, dating back to the 18th century B.C.
Many of the poems surviving from the ancient world are recorded prayers, or stories about the religious subject matter, but they also include historical accounts, instructions for everyday activities, love songs, and fiction.
And since then, Poetry has expanded across generations and cultures to where we understand it in today’s modern lense.
And though you will be introduced to a few of these great examples of poetry, it is safe to say that not each text may inspire you. At least, not without the help of a passionate and clever Superprof teacher.
Being inspired by poetry is not always a direct correlation with the content presented, it is about how we interpret the given story and apply it to our own understanding of the world. Everyone can relate to poetry in some way because, ultimately, poems are written by humans like ourselves and are broadly focused on themes that are ever-present in today’s society like romance, friendship, deceit, and many more.
Poetry has been around for almost four thousand years. Like other forms of literature, poetry is written to share ideas, express emotions, and create imagery.
Poets choose words for their meaning and acoustics, arranging them to create a tempo known as the meter. Some poems incorporate rhyme schemes, with two or more lines that end in like-sounding words.
These devices such as assonance, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and rhythm are used to create these musical or incantatory effects. Similar to what we hear in today’s music.
A poem can contain many elements to give it structure. Rhyme is perhaps the most common of these elements: countless poetic works, from limericks to epic poems to pop lyrics, contain rhymes.
Poetry also uses forms and conventions to suggest differential interpretations of words or to evoke emotive responses.
Other tools poets often use are ambiguity, symbolism, irony, and other stylistic elements of poetic diction which leaves a poem open to multiple interpretations.
Similarly, figures of speech such as metaphor, simile, and metonymy establish resonance between otherwise disparate images, a layering of meanings, forming connections previously not perceived
Consider this a sampling of terms to be familiar with when working with your poetry lessons.
From sonnets and epics to haikus and villanelles, to black verses, rhyming poetry, free verse, epics, narrative poetry, haiku, pastoral poetry, sonnet, elegies, ode, limerick, lyrical poetry, ballad, soliloquy, villanelle, and so many more!
Students who don’t like writing essays may like poetry, with its dearth of fixed rules and its kinship with rap. For these students, poetry can become a gateway to other forms of writing.
You can expect during your poetry lessons to build poetry skills sets that will help the way you write, read, and understand any text, while also providing the healthy outlet needed for expression and/or surging emotions.
