About the lesson
I always adapt my teaching method to the student and context. I believe in meeting individual students at the level they've already achieved and affirming, naming and congratulating them on their current skills sets. I present myself as a compassionate co-learner who just so happens to have the knowledge the student needs. When we land on students' knowledge gaps, I enthusiastically enroll the student into making that area of improvement a joint goal for us to work on. I make sure the student sees me writing down their individual learning needs so that they can feel like a study light has truly been turned on over their head. Lecture formats occur when necessary but are always followed up with writing assignments so the student can effectively reflect their learning and reply. I love encouraging student to work in groups. Although they usually hate the prospect, small groups of students in a classroom quickly form a group bond, communicate with others they would not usually speak with, and recognize their own skills while helping one another learn. I am a big believer in having students write multiple drafts and encouraging pride in a well polished and whittled down final product.

I taught a freshman writing class at Purdue University for five years, frequently working with students from SE Asia who needed extra 1-1 assistance with college level writing. I tutor high schoolers in their homes to build their strengths in English with regard to literacy/reading, writing/composition and always to develop their confidence and analytical thought.
