About the lesson

My approach in teaching is firmly grounded in developing a healthy and self-driven practice culture in my students. As a practicing teacher, I strive tirelessly to lead by example. I ensure my students feel empowered after each lesson and hold them accountable to commit to their own daily grinds. For working with a new student, my typical process is to begin with the end in mind. According to the particular needs and expectations of the student, we discuss attainable and measurable goals for a given period of time. Especially during times of difficulty, I encourage my students to follow their curiosity and guard their motivation as we share the journey of music making together.

About Tommy

A native of Hong Kong based in Boston, Tommy Chiu has made appearances in major cities across Asia and North America as a musician and educator, including a recent solo appearance with the University of British Columbia Chamber Orchestra after being named as a finalist of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestral Institute Concerto Competition. Outside of performing, Tommy teaches brass extensively both online and in person. He serves as the brass faculty of the Performing Arts Center at MetroWest and maintains a private studio of students of all ages located throughout the United States and Hong Kong.

Tommy holds degrees from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Rutgers University, where his principal teachers included Jarod Vermette of the Hong Kong Philharmonic and Colin Williams of the New York Philharmonic. Currently, he is a doctoral candidate in brass performance at Boston University under the tutelage of Toby Oft, Principal Trombone of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
