About the lesson
We do science for two reasons: to solve problems and to satisfy our curiosity. When I tutor I always focus on these two goals. And it not only makes studying science more fun but also engrains that information in a way that rereading notes or highlighting textbooks can’t match.
If you’re a high school or college student struggling with science class we’ll start by narrowing down what concepts you’ve yet to master. Then we’ll go over the material together, asking why it’s important and making connections to other related topics. Then we’ll go through review questions, at the end of the session and a week or two later if needed, so you can see how much better you understand and retain the material we reviewed together.
The advantage of this approach is that you learn the why behind the details you’re learning in class and that information is getting connected to the bigger story of scientific laws and system-wide patterns. Research shows that people retain more information if they’re able to explain it to somebody else, able to explain why it’s important and can connect it to other related topics. And that’s what I try to do in each of my tutoring sessions.

About Kaitlyn
I've dived into the field of Biology both in and out of the classroom.
I graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University with a Bachelor's degree in Biology with Honors.
While in college, I worked as a TA and a tutor for all kinds of students. Top students, student-athletes, and students enrolled through Adaptive Services.
I then went on to work at the Naples Botanical Garden and Meadowlark Botanical Garden, where I put that degree to work caring for native plants. I not only worked as a gardener (caring for native plants, identifying diseases, and planning design projects), I also assisted with research projects focused on restoring endangered species in the Everglades Swamp.
I then taught a Cell Biology Lab at the University of Maryland. My favorite part of this job was when students designed their own experiments using what they learned throughout the semester. I was teaching this course during the COVID lockdowns and had to transition the class online, which really stretched my abilities as a teacher. I had to think of new ways to help my students learn a hands-on approach to science while learning remotely. This inspired me to start tutoring science in a way that not only helps students do better in class but also learn how to come to their own conclusions based on their own observations of the world.

Kaitlyn really cares that her students understand the material. She is engaging and responsive to her students, ensuring that they demonstrate active learning with the material so they can best understand
It was such a joy to have Kaitlyn as my lab instructor for Cell Biology at the University of Maryland. She was very knowledgeable and passionate about teaching and was incredibly kind and patient with her students. She is very gifted at what she does, and she always shows that she truly cares about her students. She has my highest recommendation!
Kaitlyn was my TA for BSCI330: Cell Biology & Physiology at UMD during the Fall 2020 semester. Kaitlyn was very accommodating and structured the class sessions very well despite being in an online environment for a traditionally hands-on lab course. Kaitlyn was very willing to answer any questions I had throughout the course and had a clear understanding of the content and made our lab sessions interesting!
Kaitlyn did a phenomenal job leading my physics lab section! She was very responsive with any questions and was always helpful in explaining challenging topics to our section. One of the best TA run labs I have had!
Kaitlyn was very thorough in teaching us cell bio lab. We had so many questions and clarifications but she took the time to make office hours and meet us outside of office hours so her students would do well. I truly appreciated the effort she went through to help us out because it showed that she was passionate about her job while also caring that her students understood the material. I was fortunate that I had a TA who responded quickly to emails and truly wanted me to do well. Her patience made her a great TA!
Kaitlyn was my Cell Biology TA at the University of Maryland, College Park. I have always struggled with the sciences and had always been disappointed with my past UMD TA's--until Kaitlyn!
She is very approachable, very kind and knowledgeable. She will not move on from a subject unless she knows you understand the topic. She instilled a confidence in me that carried me to a B in the class!Kaitlyn was extremely knowledgable about biology and very kind! She was my Cell Biology and Physiology TA and was very passionate about the subject. I found her to be a great help in the class whenever I was struggling.
Kaitlyn was my TA for Cell Biology and Physiology and she was absolutely amazing. She was impressively educated on the material, always prepared, and committed to helping her students through any question or concern. I highly recommend working with Kaitlyn!
Kaitlyn is incredibly passionate, kind, and knowledgeable. She is always eager to help her students learn and makes the experience extremely interesting and enjoyable. I'm grateful to have had Kaitlyn as my teacher!
Ms. Wagner is an excellent teacher. I had the pleasure of her instructing my lab section for university-level Cell Biology. Unlike other teachers, she was very conversational and relaxed with her teaching style, which made learning in the lab both easy and fun. She is an expert in the subject of biology and her instruction made difficult concepts seem straightforward. Her knowledge often expanded the realms of the classroom and she always had an answer to students' questions. Her nonchalant, yet informative teaching is in part what inspired me to pursue undergraduate research in the field of neurobiology. Overall, I cannot recommend Ms. Wagner enough as she is truly an excellent instructor.
Kaitlyn was always willing to provide assistance and clarification on lab reports that I struggled with. The feedback that she gave me helped me improve my scientific writing and increased my interest in biology. She has a very positive attitude and really cares about her students.
Kaitlyn was helpful and responded to all my questions when I had her for my biology lab.
Kaitlyn walked us through different lab projects and was always prepared to answer our questions. She guided our lessons smoothly and confidently and as a student I felt comfortable exploring biological concepts with her guidance.
Kaitlyn was a TA for my cellular biology lab in college. She did an amazing job explaining difficult concepts and made the class enjoyable for me. She was incredibly patient and clearly has a passion for teaching science.
